I feel like I’m sitting in my living room…
That’s how several regulars and even staff members describe the vibe at The Cargo Café.
Opened in 1990 by the Gary and David Rabin and long time family friend Nick Marzigliano the restaurant and neighborhood bar is forever changing, trying on new ideas and new looks.
The Cargo’s ever evolving persona and, “come as you are” attitude attracts an equally varied crowd. Among the clientele you’ll find neighborhood regulars, local politicians, young hipsters, and a collection of folks that claim they’ve been there since the beginning. There is also a true sense of community, with the Rabin Brothers blasting Alice’s Restaurant as they serve up an annual Thanksgiving Dinner to anyone who needs one.
Perhaps because of its famous clock ticking down to the end of the world, The Cargo exists in the moment, providing a fun and comfortable environment, with something happening every night: Sunday Night Trivia, Monday Night Movies, and live musicians playing Jazz, Rock ‘n Roll and Big Band.
So what does Gary hope a first timer gets out of The Cargo? “A decent meal, a full belly, and a desire to come back again.” And when they return for seconds? “I hope they’ll see something different.” – Tara Lynn Wagner
